Straight Bourbon Whiskey
BARREL PROOF
By Cedar Ridge Distillery
116 Proof
Char No. 3 / Non-Chill Filtered
Read More> Appearance - This pour has a semi-golden amber color. After a quick swirl it coats decently well and develops legs fast that are thin and sporadic as they streak down the glen. This pour looks fun!
Nose - As you get into the glen, the pour first starts off with burnt brown sugar, toffee, and cinnamon (stick) spice. As you go back in you get vanilla and some light cherry notes as well as some oak and citrus notes. The nose on this is very nice!
Palate - As you take that first small sip this pour begins its story with notes of thick syrup and brown sugar along with some peanut. With this combination, I can’t help but think of peanut brittle! I love me some of that! Wow! As we go back in for a slightly larger sip we get black pepper and tobacco as well as some creamy vanilla with a hint of corn. This palate is really solid! Borderline dessert pour as that peanut brittle combination of notes leads you that way, but the black pepper is enough to keep it from being too sweet.
Finish - As you sit with this pour and allow it to finish its story, you get notes of sweet molasses that linger along with some light chocolate and oak. The finish is medium as it does not last too long, but long enough for one to remember the pours tale. The finish is about spot on as any more or less and I think you might just miss out on this wonderful experience that shifts from sweet to spice and back to sweet. With the sweetness muted on the finish, it becomes more than a dessert pour and becomes a wonderful conversation to be shared with friends.
Overall - This pour is not complicated at all, for many it could be described as mundane. But if you stopped there, you would completely miss the true gift this pour is. It is so simple on the surface, yet allows one to do something most people long to do. That is have a wonderful pour that won’t hijack a conversation with friends, but still be a part of the conversation. It’s a beautiful balance between meh and memorable, this isn’t an insult, it’s actually high praise. I hope everyone can understand this statement, get one of these and pour it up with some friends and experience for yourself. This pour is no slouch!
Score #/10 - aAs I sit and wonder just how I will score this pour, I believe that I am going to settle in on a 7.2/10 and as I take another sip I am reassured that I am right. This is one of those pours that if you go in with the expectation of letting the pour speak you will enjoy it immensely! Read Less

14 Year Old Tennessee Whiskey< Read Morebr /> Batch 1

Aged 1️⃣4️⃣ Years
Mashbill:
80% 🌽
12% Malted Barley

Simply a phenomenal pour! JD is one of my top brands for sure and the did not disappoint with this release!
For the 14 Year Batch 1, everything tastes a shade darker, a touch drier, and more developed. In particular, the red cherry notes from the brand’s best release to date, 12 Year Batch 1, are now darker cherry, molasses is now more robust and sweet oak is still sweet but more charred and aged. Port Cask Finished Straight Rye
By Cedar Ridge Distillery
105 Proof
Straight Rye Finished in Estate Port Wine Casks
Read More /> Appearance - The pour has a deep amber appearance in the glen. After a quick swirl you see that it coats well and begins to form thin closely spaced legs that take a while to begin to move. They all move at different paces back to the pour. This pour looks like it will be very good!
Nose - As you first get into the pour, you are met with this amazing note of cooked cherries, a dark stone fruit like plum, and a sweetness like molasses. Wow, that is crazy good! As you go back in you get hints of baking spice and just a small touch of leather and oak. This nose is absolutely wonderful and will have you wanting to take that first sip!
Palate - Taking that first small sip you get cooked cherries and figs! Loving this already! Going back and taking a slightly larger sip you begin to get burnt caramel and semi bitter dark chocolate, and then all that beautiful rye begins to break through as this pour goes from sweet to spice! That rye comes across with some black pepper and pops of clove as it takes over from that sweet start! What a great transition of sweet to rye spice! The palate on this pour is dangerously delicious!
Finish - The finish on the pour is long and you are left with the lingering notes of oak spice, tobacco, and a small amount of cedar. You have the occasional return of the cherry note, but it vanishes almost as quickly as it appeared and the rye spice is back center stage. I am a fan of this finish! It is exactly what you want in a finished rye, all the sweetness up front and that rye spice rolling in and being what you get last. Such a wonderful finish!
Overall - This Port Wine finished rye is exactly what a great finished rye should be. You get the secondary finish that shines but isn’t so strong that you lose the wonderful rye spice and all it offers. It warms your chest and belly perfectly and is balanced. This is a really a rye that should be tried if you enjoy finished ryes, this one is on point!
Score #/10 - As I sit and finish this pour it hits me that as the spice takes center stage and begins to bring that rye warmth, another sip resets the entire process. This allows one to let that black pepper note to build until they want relief and a small sip sends you right back to the sweet molasses and cooked cherry. Wonderful! With so much on my mind I just think that this pour is an easy 7.8 and for a rye, that is pretty high in my list. Read Less

Review #24 Silk Velvet Single Barrel
Distillery: Western Kentucky Distilling
ABV/Proof: 53.5/107
Age Statement Read More: 7 Years
Mash Bill: 75% Corn, 21% Rye, 4% Malted Barely
If you had the chance to visit or read anything about KBF this year, chances are Silk Velvet came up. Like all great whiskeys, the story behind its name is just as intriguing as the whiskey itself. If you get the chance, visit their website and read more about it. It’s well worth it!
Nose: Oak,spice, vanilla covered cherries, caramel and subtle earthy tones.
Palate: Rich vanilla/caramel combination lead the way, nutmeg spice, oak and subtle hints of cherry from the nose.
Finish: Nutmeg spice leads the way on the finish, offering a warm and lingering hug. Subtle earthy notes from the nose return, joined by hints of oak, and I love how the cherry flavor makes a gentle comeback toward the end.
I rate this at 8.3 out of 10.
I’ll start off by saying this, if you have the chance to pick this up, do it. I truly think as Silk Velvet expands their footprint, this is a sleeping giant. Now I need to get ahold of a Small Batch! Cheers! Read Less
