Review #14 Tarnished Truth Discretion Single Barrel
Distillery: Tarnished Truth
ABV/Proof: 61.5/123
Age Stat Read Moreement: 5 years
Mash Bill: 70% Corn, 18% Wheat and 12% Malted Barley Non Chill Filtered
Today, we’re going to jump into a Distillery that might be new for some! Tarnished Truth was founded in 2013 and opened its distillery in 2018. It is located in the lower level of the Historic Cavalier Hotel in Virginia Beach, about a block from the Atlantic Ocean.
Nose: Right away the proof gets your attention, caramel, nuttiness, hints of cherry and oak.
Palate: Caramel bomb, wow! Nice pepper spice kicks in mid-palate, nuttiness and caramel combination is phenomenal, subtle hints of grain and a fantastic oak presence. Being 5 years, it’s not aged oak, but it offers a bold oak that doesn’t come off bitter by any means and really gives this a great backbone.
Finish: Pepper spice offers a warm hug up front, with hints of caramel and oak underneath. As the pour develops, the heat gradually softens, allowing the flavors to settle in with balance.
I would rate this a 7.5 out of 10, and consider this a buy. It’s unique and I’ve really enjoyed it!
If you’re on the fence about a future trip to Virginia Beach, maybe a stop at Tarnished Truth can persuade you the rest of the way. As I said in the rating, there’s just something about this unique profile that I have found to enjoy. Hopefully I can run into more of their lineup sometime in the future!

Thirteenth Colony Distilleries
Cask Strength Rye
Batch 2025
120.7 Proof
Appearance - The ha Read Mores this wonderful deep caramel hue to it. After a quick swirl in the glen you see that it coats the glen really well and slowly begins to develop legs. The legs are medium sized and they randomly stream down the glass back to the pour. It leaves a thick coating that as you sit with it begins to create a second set of thick legs that begin to crawl down the glen. This pour looks absolutely delightful, let’s get into the nose on this pour!
Nose - As you get started you are greeted with lots of caramel and baking spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove. It comes together very well and is almost syrupy on the nose. Then as you get deeper into the glen you begin to get vanilla crème and just a hint of dark coffee. This doesn’t come across as a 120 proof whiskey, while full of notes, it’s very mild on the nose which is a bonus. This nose is splendid and really gets you excited to take that first sip, so let’s get into it!
Palate - That first small sip you get intense black pepper spice right out the gate that builds quickly and then begins to fade and then the rest of the notes begin to come along. You get that rye bready note as well as this maple syrup that comes in and helps tame some of the spice that had built up from that black pepper punch at the start. This is much needed as it rounds out the pour nicely on the palate. Then you get this light vanilla and almond that brings to mind an almond cookie. Really solid palate on this pour!
Finish - The finish is medium long and as you sit with it you get that sweet anise note that can remind one of root beer as well as hints of figs or raisins at the very end. But this note is so light and it passes quickly as the spice lingers at the top of the throat and the sweet anise just sits on the mid palate and is the most dominant and last note you get on this wonderful pour.
Water Added - After adding two (2) drops of water the nose is now less sweet and dominated by those baking spices and a bit more ethanol seems to be biting at the nose as well. The water doesn’t do the nose any favors. On the palate you now that nice black pepper but with a strong vanilla that intermingles with it to tame the spice and makes it spicy and sweet with the maple syrup note coming through as well. This might be a slight improvement, but it’s really close. The finish however doesn’t seem to change much, the sweet anise is so dominant and has a lingering spice to it as well. But it’s still very tasty, although it’s a draw on it with the water added.
Overall - This pour is everything you wish the 95 proof offering of the rye was. It’s that pour turned up with the proof and it works! This pour, while not being complex, does give you enough to make it fun to sip and allow the notes to mingle and dance on the palate in a way that is very pleasing. It’s not going to blow your socks off, but it will be a pour you will have a hard time sitting down. It’s still better than many ryes that hit the market and is one that should be snagged and enjoyed if you are a fan of Thirteenth Colony ryes. This pour just highlights that these folks at Thirteenth Colony know how to put out an amazing pour! Well done, I’m glad I have one!
Score #/10 - As I sit and finish off this pour I am convinced that this a very solid 8.3 as it is just a very enjoyable pour. That sweet anise note just does it and pushes it up the chart for me as I do love root beer! Then you add that vanilla crème and it’s a wrap! Great job Thirteenth Colony! Read Less

Straight R👁️ Whiskey
The Boss Hog VIII
LapuLapu’s Pacific
2021 Limited Edition
Single Barre Read Morel | Barrel Strength
Finished in Single-Island Philippine Rum Barrels
106.1 proof
It may the best 👃 we have had in 2025… hands down!
“An epic sequel to the World’s Best Rye, The Boss Hog VIII: LapuLapu’s Pacific completes our journey around the world, unfurling a chronicle as rich and bold as the whiskey itself.
Upon crossing the Pacific, Captain Magellan met his fate at the hands of the legendary Filipino warrior LapuLapu. A fierce and vociferous defender of independence, LapuLapu led his island home against the Spaniards. There he forged a successful fortification, staving off colonial occupation for more than forty years.
In honor of our new hero, this rare edition sees a double finish in high toast, small batch, single island Philippine Rum casks, adding layers of warm spice and delicate tropical notes to an already deeply complex, well aged Rye Whiskey. LapuLapu’s Pacific is a profound statement of strength and independence, a spectacular sequel to Magellan’s Atlantic.” Read Less

The real standout for me is the texture. This has a texture that unicorns should be jealous of. Very thick and viscous.
