Bourbon Cocktails You Need to Try!

Best Bourbon Cocktails Need to Try

For some reason, bourbon cocktails are still frowned upon by some purists. For the life of us, we can’t understand why. While there are certainly plenty of bourbons to reserve for sipping on their own, some bourbons work even better in the context of a cocktail. Whether you’re mixing it up for yourself or simply being a good host, these are the best bourbon cocktails to keep in your arsenal.

The Bourbon Old Fashioned

The most reliable of the bourbon cocktail bunch. The Bourbon Old Fashioned is one of those cocktails that any bourbon lover, aficionado or not will recognize at the drop of a hat. Part of the charm is that it’s a hard cocktail to get wrong. All you need to do is toss a sugar cube (or a teaspoon of sugar or simple syrup), a few dashes of bitters, and two ounces of your favorite bourbon into an old-fashioned glass. Stir the drink until sugar dissolves, then add ice, stir to chill, and then garnish with an orange wheel and maraschino cherry.

Mint Julep

Another well-known-but-painfully-underrated bourbon cocktail, the Mint Julep was a cultural staple in the American south during the 19th and 20th centuries. What’s interesting is that it's still the official drink of the Kentucky Derby. This delicious cocktail involves adding bourbon to a Julep cup, along with the simple syrup, fresh mint, and shaved ice, and turning it into a delicious adult treat that’s especially perfect in the summertime.

John Collins

Typically,  bourbon drinks are perfect for warming up on a cold winter’s night, but some summer-friendly options didn’t hurt anyone! Pick out a bourbon that will play well with strong citrus flavors, combine one and a half ounces of bourbon, an ounce of fresh lime juice, and half an ounce of simple syrup in a Collins glass with ice. Top it off with club soda and garnish with an orange slice and a maraschino cherry.

Cherry-Bourbon Soda Can Cocktail

This one’s a ridiculously simple cocktail. Pop open a can of cherry cola soda and sip a bit off the top. Add 1 1/2 ounces of bourbon, 1 ounce Campari, and a squeeze of fresh lime. No need to be super precise here, this is all about simplicity.

Kentucky Mule

Swap vodka for bourbon in a Moscow mule and you’ve got the Kentucky mule! It’s bubbly, bright, and bold: with zingy lime and a spicy whiskey finish. Even better: it’s so easy to make! There’s no shaking or stirring required: just pour it all into the glass. The mule has had a major comeback lately: but it’s a classic cocktail that’s solidified its place in cocktail history.

Naughty But Nice Cocktail

This Christmas cocktail has a refreshing and delicious taste that will make your mouth water. It’s made with orange juice, ginger syrup (gotta have some Christmas spice), and cranberry juice as well as club soda and finally, served over ice and garnished with orange slices and fresh cranberries. Perfectly spicy and festive all in one sip!

So don’t be afraid, and give it a go! You won’t need to pack a lot of bartending equipment, but you’ll still get the benefit of great bourbon cocktails with a minimum of effort.
